Three Cubans were arrested in the department of Maldonado, Uruguay, after assaulting law enforcement agents and damaging a police vehicle, according to a report from local authorities.
The spokesperson for the Maldonado Police Chief, Santiago Rosa, told the media outlet La Portada that the emergency services were alerted about an incident that occurred in the event hall of the San Fernando neighborhood.
"It happened that a person not affiliated with the event entered without the organizers' authorization, who requested police presence. Immediately, a URPM vehicle from Operational Zone II, along with a vehicle from the 6th Section of Maldonado Nuevo, responded," the informational space stated on the social network Facebook.
Rosa, for her part, stated that when she attempted to talk to the 31-year-old man, who is a foreign national, he disobeyed the officer's request, and at the same time, a 24-year-old man and a 38-year-old woman began to assault the acting officers, causing injuries to a policewoman.
He also added that the man initially detained, who was inside a police vehicle, caused damage to the partition and door of the vehicle.
The individuals, whose names were not disclosed, were arrested and are now in the hands of justice.
In this month of August, two other individuals of Cuban nationality were also arrested in Maldonado following a police control operation.
The men, identified by their initials as D.M.R., 49 years old, and R.D.M.P., 25, were transferred to a police station, according to the local outlet Gente Online.
During the inspection, two vehicles belonging to the Cubans were seized, in which they were transporting goods, including alcoholic beverages and Brazilian cigarettes.
The sentences issued by a Uruguayan court established three months of probation for D.M.R., who was convicted of smuggling.
Meanwhile, R.D.M.P. must serve five months under probation for two offenses of smuggling in a real reiteration, the mentioned space indicated.
Last July, two young Cubans, a 23-year-old woman and a 24-year-old man, were arrested in the department of Canelones for stealing cartons of eggs from the poultry farm where they worked.
The arrested individuals -whose identities have not been revealed- committed the robbery on a farm located in the jurisdiction of Section 12 of San Bautista, in the locality of San Antonio.
Just over a year ago, in the city of Maldonado itself, four Cubans, who were part of a criminal gang, were accused of smuggling goods and receiving stolen property.
All were arrested after a lead following the detention of some Uruguayan drivers of two trucks, in which a large amount of cash was found, led to nearby homes from where the vehicles had departed.
Uruguay is one of the common destinations for Cubans who emigrate from the island due to the economic crisis, seeking better living conditions. Thousands of families have settled in that South American nation in recent years.
