Authorities in the province of Cienfuegos urged the population to intensify savings measures after several days of reported electricity outages lasting between 11 and 16 hours.

Armando Carranza Valladares, the first secretary of the Communist Party of Cuba in that territory, called for an intensification of the implementation of electricity saving measures and for speeding up repairs of breakdowns to minimize impacts on households, as reported by the official newspaper 5 de Septiembre.

"We need every citizen to understand the importance of saving energy in these critical times," the official said at a press conference.

He said that the prolonged blackouts were due to unforeseen failures in several thermoelectric plants in the country.

For her part, Yolexis Rodríguez Armada, the governor of the province, emphasized the importance of optimizing resources and stated that reducing energy demand could decrease the duration of blackouts.

"If we work on decreasing the demand further, we will also reduce the blackout time," he emphasized.

On Thursday, the Cuban regime reported that the situation regarding blackouts was critical, as the Electric Union (UNE) anticipated an impact of 1,305 MW of blackouts during peak hours, a record figure for this summer and equivalent to almost half of the national demand.

On Wednesday, the service was also affected by a deficit in generation capacity for 24 hours.

The maximum volume of power outages at the national level was recorded this Wednesday at 8:50 p.m. and was 1,186 MW, which is 36 MW higher than what was estimated.

36 distributed generation plants were out of service due to lack of fuel, totaling 183 MW affected by this issue.

This Friday, the situation was alarming. The simultaneous shutdown of seven thermoelectric units due to "breakdowns" indicates that there will be blackouts during the day amounting to 1,245 MW.
