The renowned Cuban musician and composer Edesio Alejandro is hospitalized in serious condition in Madrid due to a spinal tumor, a complication arising from the prostate cancer he has been suffering from for four years.
According to a source close to the independent portal CubaNet, he is undergoing treatment for the disease, but the doctors informed his family that he has "advanced metastasis."
"Edesio knows the stage of his cancer, but he is fighting with optimism and is receiving the best possible care," said a friend.
The actor, singer, and music promoter known as Miguel Elkubanisimo opened an account on the GoFundMe platform to raise money that will be used to pay for an alternative treatment that can help him and lasts from one to two years. The cost amounts to 36,000 euros.
"We are not going to wait to have the full budget to start. Every little contribution counts and will allow us to begin acquiring the medications and necessary products so that Edesio can start his treatment as soon as possible," noted Elkubanisimo.
Idolka de Erbiti Sánchez, the musician's wife, noted that they have made progress with the radiation treatments. "In September, the chemotherapy sessions will begin, one session every two weeks," she emphasized.
Edesio himself took advantage of the donation campaign to give details about his health condition and to thank everyone for their prayers for his recovery.
"I am hospitalized in a sanatorium in Madrid. Although cancer has not defeated me, we are in a very close fight and things are not going well. I am in the sanatorium because the illness is causing a lot of pain, and we will be here until God decides," he expressed.
The prestigious 66-year-old arranger and composer explained that they found an alternative medicine with products from 4Life Research, which they have read has very good results.
"Unfortunately, we cannot afford this treatment, as it is expensive and also has a long duration, approximately between one and two years. Thanks to a dear friend and artist, Miguel Elkubanisimo, his family, and Dr. Dayami Tantanini, we have managed to cover the first month of the treatment," he commented.
Edesio, who has Spanish citizenship, has been in Madrid since the end of 2021 because he did not have medical treatment in Cuba due to the health crisis the Island is experiencing.
"I came because I have been living with prostate cancer for four years. Recently, the medicine that controls that cancer has run out in Cuba [...]. So I have to be here, there is no other option. If I want to live, I have to be here," he revealed in March to Diario de Cuba.
Thanks to Spanish medicine, she has been able to treat the illness, despite it being very advanced. And although she faces financial difficulties and has lacked the expected support in Spain, she remains hopeful for recovery.
His story is another example of the shortcomings of the Cuban healthcare system. Even recognized artists like him suffer from the scarcity of medications and supplies.
"We go through the same situations that all Cubans have experienced. (...) Medications have been gradually unavailable until the situation right now is truly chaotic. Medicines that were manufactured in Cuba are no longer being produced," he lamented.
"I was really treated by the best doctors. The problem is that it goes beyond the doctor. Sometimes there isn't even the reagent to do the analysis," he reported.
