The star former Cuban volleyball player Ramón Gato Moya reunited with his mother in Italy after six years without seeing each other.
Gato shared a photograph taken with his mom at their home in Verona, in the north of the country, on his Facebook page.
"With my mom, Esperanza Moya Font. The last time we saw each other in person was in August 2018. Today, after 6 years, we see each other again. Thank you for this beautiful moment. A mother is always a mother," she expressed.
Born in Camagüey on November 16, 1973, Ramón Gato was a tremendous attacker who was part of the national team from 1994 to 2001, and with which he attended all international events.
In December 2001, when he was in Flanders, Belgium, he left the hotel where he was staying and, along with his teammates Ihosvani Hernández, Leonel Marshall, Jorge Luis Hernández, Ángel Dennis, and Yasser Romero, took a train to Italy, where they applied for political asylum.
Months earlier, the team had won the gold medal in Japan at the FIVB Volleyball World Grand Champions Cup.
After his decision, the player from Agramonte was able to continue his career in various professional leagues for a long time, including the Italian league.
According to the portal volleywood.net, from 2003 to 2008 he played for the Verona team and also in Qatar, for Al Arabi, for a short period, from 2004 to 2005. Years later he played with Padua, the Slovenian ACH Bled, and for Geotec Isernia, in Division A2 of the Italian League.
