A Cuban from Hialeah was arrested for hitting and leaving an elderly man unconscious who was feeding some chickens in the parking lot of a pharmacy.

Edwyn Oriel Díaz, 46 years old, was arrested last Thursday, the very day his victim was turning 75.

The incident occurred on July 10 outside the CVS pharmacy at 101 Hialeah Drive.

Around 7:40 p.m., the man, as he usually does, was feeding the birds when suddenly Díaz approached him from behind and struck him without apparent motive. The elderly man fell face-first to the ground and became unconscious.

According to the Police, a witness of the attack took a photo of Díaz with his cell phone and called the Police. The Cuban noticed and made an obscene gesture as he left. The good Samaritan also wrote down the license plate number of Díaz's truck, where he sleeps.

For his part, the victim stated that he only remembered regaining consciousness when the neighbors accompanied him home and that before the attack, the abuser had "aggressively approached him" up to three times while he was feeding the birds.

Officers from the Special Victims Unit of the Hialeah Police found Díaz's truck outside his mother's house, in the 2100 block of West Fourth Court, and he was inside.

The attacker was arrested on the charge of aggravated assault against a person aged 65 or older, a first-degree felony.

He is detained at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center, and his bail has not yet been set.
