Cuban para-athlete Omara Durand Elías won her tenth gold medal of her sports career this Thursday by claiming victory in the 100 meters, T12 category, at the Paralympic Games in Paris.
Durand, accompanied by her guide Yunior Kindelán, recorded a time of 11.81 seconds at the Stade de France.
The Cuban athlete surpassed her closest rivals: the Ukrainian Oksana Boturchuk, who clocked 12.17 seconds, and the German Katrin Mueller-Rottgardt, who recorded a time of 12.26. All three athletes achieved their best marks of the season.
This is the fourth Paralympic title that Omara Durand has won in the 100 meters.
Previously, he won gold in this distance at the London 2012 edition, where he clocked 12.00 seconds; Rio 2016, where he set the current world record with 11.40; and Tokyo 2020, with a time of 11.49.
The Ukrainian Boturchuk, who finished in second place at Paris 2024, had already been on the podium in this event in previous editions, winning the bronze medal in London 2012 (12.18) and silver in Tokyo 2020 (12.03), always competing against the Cuban.
Durand and his coach still have the opportunity to add a new title in the 200 meters, an event that Durand has already won at Rio 2016 and Tokyo 2020.
If he achieves a third victory in Paris, Durand would obtain his eleventh Paralympic gold medal, further solidifying his legacy in the history of Paralympic sports.
At the time of closing this note, the Cuban delegation is ranked 24th in the Paralympic medal table, having won four gold medals and two silver medals, for a total of six medals.
