The Mega Millions jackpot soared to 800 million dollars for the next drawing on September 10 in the U.S., after there was no winner in this Friday's draw.

If there is a lucky winner on Tuesday, they will be able to choose between receiving an annualized prize, which consists of an immediate payment followed by 29 annual payments that increase by 5% each year, or a lump sum payment that, for the next drawing, will be 401.8 million dollars.

Both prize options are before taxes. Once the prize is won, the winner will be deducted 24%. Additionally, they would have to pay the maximum federal tax rate of 37%. They will also have to pay state taxes if the state where they purchased their ticket taxes lottery winnings or collects income tax.

The winning numbers on September 6 were 6, 23, 41, 59, 63, and 25, and the Megaplier was 25.

So far in 2024, only two Mega Millions jackpots have been won: on March 26 in New Jersey and June 4 in Illinois.

Mega Millions is the only lottery game that has generated six jackpots over 1 billion, all won in different states.

The jackpot was won in Florida on August 8, 2023, and was worth $1.602 billion.

To participate in the raffle, players must buy a ticket in one of the 47 jurisdictions where Mega Millions is available, which includes most of the United States, the District of Columbia, and the Virgin Islands. It is not available in Alabama, Alaska, Hawaii, Nevada, Utah, nor in Puerto Rico.

Participants must choose six numbers: five numbers from 1 to 70 and one number from 1 to 25. To win the jackpot, you must match the six numbers that come up on the white balls and the gold ball in the corresponding drawing.

However, players with fewer correct answers can receive between one and two million dollars.

The Mega Millions drawings take place every Tuesday and Friday at 11:00 p.m. ET. The cost of the ticket is two dollars.

The cutoff time for purchasing tickets is usually within one or two hours before the draw, whether in person or online. However, it varies from state to state.
