Another garbage dump caught fire this Thursday near the "La Plaza" market on Aguilera Street in Santiago de Cuba, a city where waste management is in crisis.

This incident follows several fires caused by residents of that area, who, due to the inefficient collection of solid waste in the province, have decided to set the dumps on fire as a desperate measure, reported local reporter Yosmany Mayeta.

The firefighters arrived at the scene after receiving multiple calls from residents and managed to extinguish the fire.

The neighbors report the lack of effective response from the authorities and the prolonged absence of community services to collect the garbage.

Mayeta reported another recent fire where the blaze occurred near a kerosene sales point, an incident that added to a series of similar fires in Santiago de Cuba in recent weeks.

A few weeks ago, residents of the "Las Flores" Military Settlement also set a dumpster on fire in protest against the accumulation of garbage in their community.

The waste crisis in Santiago is part of a broader problem affecting other cities in the country. A recent study in Havana revealed that each day, the equivalent of three Olympic-sized swimming pools of garbage is not collected, creating an environment conducive to the proliferation of diseases.
