Journalist José Raúl Gallego reported that a huge dump borders a children's circle in Cuba, a country facing a severe crisis in solid waste collection.
In a video shared by the activist on his X channel, an area in Pedro Nuevo, between Anita and Mantilla, adjacent to the Tierna Sonrisa children's circle, is observed, where children are exposed to diseases and vectors that proliferate in the waste.
"The garbage that has misgoverned Cuba for 65 years has turned the country into a giant dump. This video is in Pedro Nuevo, between Anita and Mantilla, right next to the children's circle Tierna Sonrisa, where there are children exposed to diseases and vectors that proliferate in the waste," wrote Gallego.
The garbage crisis is not exclusive to Havana; in June, residents of Altamira in Santiago de Cuba had already reported the accumulation of garbage around a school and a children's circle.
The parents of the children attending the Rubén Martínez Villena primary school, known as Don Bosco, and the Amiguitos del Mundo children's center had protested about the unsanitary conditions surrounding these educational institutions.
In a second dumpster, located between the children's circle and a supermarket on 7 de Mármol Street, trash was mixed with stagnant dirty water, creating an unhealthy environment.
A resident then expressed that "No one cares about small children anymore. They no longer care if a child gets sick from dengue or Oropouche. They talk about living conditions in other parts of the world, but they don't want to see how we Cubans live."
The authorities of the country argue that they do not have the resources or fuel to collect the accumulated garbage in the streets.
