Mother of Cuban ex-MLB player José Fernández remembers him eight years after his tragic death.

"Although time passes, love and memories endure," wrote the mother of the unforgettable athlete.

Maritza Gómez, mother of the former Cuban pitcher for the Miami Marlins, José Fernández, who died prematurely in a maritime accident in 2016, shared several messages on social media this September 25, marking the eight-year anniversary of the tragic and unexpected event.

In words published in several posts on the social network Facebook, Gómez expressed the pain he still feels after the loss: "I don't have many words when it comes to losing a child."

He added that his son's memories are the "most beautiful legacy" he left in their hearts. He also emphasized that although time passes, love and memories endure, and that despite the physical separation, he feels they remain united by an eternal love between mother and son.

The posts were accompanied by photos and videos of the star pitcher, who - at the time of his death - was considered one of the best in Major League Baseball despite his young age.

José Fernández, born in Santa Clara, Cuba, on July 31, 1992, tragically died on September 25, 2016, at the age of 24, following a boating accident in Miami Beach, Florida.

"The Boy," as they called him, passed away along with his friends Emilio Macías and Eduardo Rivero. Authorities reported that Fernández was driving the boat at the time of the accident under the influence of alcohol or toxic substances.

At the time of his death, his wife María Arias was pregnant with their daughter Penélope, who was born without knowing her father.

Despite his short career in the Major Leagues, José Fernández left an indelible mark on baseball. In his four seasons with the Marlins, he achieved a record of 38 wins and 17 losses, with an ERA of 2.58 and 589 strikeouts in 471 and one-third innings.

These performances led him to participate in the All-Star Game twice, establishing himself as one of the most promising talents in the sport.

Eight years after his passing, his legacy remains alive in the hearts of his loved ones and the fans who admired his meteoric rise in professional baseball.
