A man approximately 53 years old drowned this Thursday morning at Siboney Beach in Santiago de Cuba, reported local journalist Yosmany Mayeta.
According to witnesses at the scene, the man was swimming alongside four other people in choppy waters, and after the incident, he was placed on the sand, where the body waited for hours for the relevant authorities.
Up to the moment of writing this news, there was a small group of police at the scene, but no doctor or forensic personnel had arrived at the site of the incident, despite the fact that the event occurred several hours ago, Mayeta said on his Facebook page.
A woman, whose husband was nearby, wrote to the journalist's page and confirmed two hours ago that the man's body was still on the sand.
"My husband says they still have him in the sand with only his face covered. It was this morning, and neither forensic experts nor anyone from the Siboney health center has arrived," the woman reported.
The victim, who was accompanied by two men and two women, was swimming in the sea, which was choppy at the time of the incident.
The witnesses of the incident and the close relatives have requested help to identify the deceased.
This new drowning case adds to a series of similar incidents that have occurred in Santiago de Cuba in recent months.
In August, a nine-year-old boy identified as Danger Curo Padilla passed away after drowning in the Chalons reservoir, the oldest dam in the country.
The minor was found dead after a desperate search by his family.
In that province, there has been an increase in drowning cases at its beaches and reservoirs, some of them in areas not designated for recreational swimming.
Also, a woman identified as Amarilis Asin Sosa died at Buey Cabón beach, and in May, two young people died at Sardinero beach.
