Lis Cuesta and the First Lady of Vietnam deliver a donation at a school in Havana.

The Vo Thi Thang elementary school, located on Fifth Avenue in the elitist neighborhood of Miramar, is a benchmark within the public education system in Cuba, which is why it is one of the schools that receives the most visits from foreign delegations.

The First Lady of Vietnam, Mrs. Ngo Phuong Ly, visited the Vo Thi Thang primary school on Thursday, accompanied by the not-first lady of Cuba, the official from the Ministry of Culture, Lis Cuesta Peraza, and the Cuban Minister of Education, Naima Ariatne Trujillo Barreto.

In an unusual scene of official visits from foreign leaders to the Island, the wife of Vietnamese President To Lam presented gifts and donations of educational materials to the students of the school located in the capital municipality of Playa.

"The First Lady of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam was received at Vo Thi Thang primary school by students and teachers as part of the activities planned by the high-level delegation led by Comrade To Lam, General Secretary of the Communist Party and President of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam, visiting our country," reported the Cuban Ministry of Education (MINED) on its social media.

Although the official press and the communication department of MINED did not mention the delivery of the donation or share images of its handover, the official media in Vietnam did cover the unusual event and published snapshots of the wives of both leaders presenting the gifts to the students of the school.

According to the official pro-government television channel VTV, Ngo Phuong Ly delivered teaching materials and school supplies to the school and the students, accompanied by Cuesta Peraza. In addition, both listened to leaders of the Cuban education sector and the school director, who celebrated the history of the training and development of the Martial Arts School.

Mrs. Ngo Phuong Ly expressed her wishes for the school to continue the tradition and inherit the revolutionary cause of previous generations, while constantly nurturing solidarity and the faithful relationship between Vietnam and Cuba.

The Vo Thi Thang Primary School was founded by Fidel Castro in late 1968. Since then, the educational center located on Fifth Avenue in the elite neighborhood of Miramar has become a reference point within the public education system in Cuba, which is why it is one of the schools that receives the most visits from foreign delegations to which the regime showcases "the achievements" of the so-called "revolution" in education, along with the primary school "Solidarity with Chile."

In addition to presentable facilities, classrooms with decent desks, and teaching materials that the rest of the schools in the country do not have, Vo Thi Thang has a modern Computer Room donated by the late General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong in March 2018.

On its online portal, the Vietnamese state television emphasized that "the school is committed to building increasingly spacious facilities, constantly improving the quality of education to meet learning needs and to be worthy of the affection of the Party, State, and People of Vietnam, as well as the special friendship between the two countries."

"Although Vietnam and Cuba are halfway around the world from each other, they have an invisible thread that connects them closely. That is the traditional solidarity, camaraderie, and special closeness between the peoples of the two countries that President Ho Chi Minh, Commander in Chief Fidel Castro, and generations of leaders from both countries have constantly fostered. The beautiful school named after the heroine Vo Thi Thang is a vivid expression of that special relationship and affection between the two peoples," said the First Lady of Vietnam.

From Creole kitchens to high-level visits, the wife of Cuban leader Miguel Díaz-Canel has been a key figure in organizing and promoting exclusive tourism and gastronomic events, as well as receptions for visiting government delegations in Cuba.

Despite the food crisis that has characterized her husband's administration, Cuesta Peraza has spared no expense in entertaining her guests, earning criticism from public opinion and the disdain of many Cubans who are fed up with her media presence and her deliberate provocations on social media.
