A young Venezuelan woman living in Homestead, Florida, shared her experience living in this area in a video she posted on her TikTok profile (@yettsa.fajas), where she reveals how much rent costs in her residence.
"We live in South Florida, in a city called Homestead. These are the houses we live in, in this residence it costs 3,000 dollars a month. When someone lives outside, they think that the people who live here are rolling in money, and that's a lie," commented this Latina, who warns her followers about the high costs of living in this area.
"People are trying to survive, that's why they don't stop and work, work, work... because things are very expensive," she explained. Although Homestead is more affordable than Miami, she says that living there is still an economic challenge. Yettsa added that many people prefer to live in Florida because of the warm climate, thus avoiding the cold areas of the northern part of the country.
"The United States is not what people think before they arrive. When you get here, you realize that you work to pay, not to live. You think it's a lie until you arrive and experience it," he said.
He also offered a suggestion for those planning to move to the United States: "This is not a city to start in; you should go to Georgia or North or South Carolina to settle down and then come down here."
The video has generated debate among those who share the difficulties of living in the United States and those who are looking for more affordable alternatives in other regions of the country.
"For some reason, many people are moving to trailer-type homes, where the rent averages $1000. It's a risk, but it's the only way to save when starting out." "It's the cheapest option, because if you move to Brickell, you won't live to tell about it." "I live in South Carolina and it's no longer economical. Everything has changed! I've been in this country for years and it’s no longer affordable." "Everything in Florida has gone up, in all the counties. I live in Clermont, Florida, and rent is high." "And those of us who live in Homestead find it more economical, although you have to be careful; there are many dangerous places here." "Finally, someone is speaking the truth," reacted some users.
