Diosdelkis Cervantes has passed away, a young man who was in critical condition after the horse-drawn carriage he and his brother were driving was struck early Sunday morning in Santiago de Cuba by a car from the provincial office of the Attorney General of the Republic (FGR).
The update on the case was announced by journalist Yosmany Mayeta, who previously reported on the accident and the almost instantaneous death of Diosleidys Cervantes, the other brother who was traveling in the car and who was buried a few hours ago.
The mentioned source indicated that the injuries of the young driver of the state vehicle - who apparently had consumed alcoholic beverages - were minor, despite the fact that images of the vehicle showed that the car belonging to the Prosecutor's Office suffered serious damage and was overturned on the road after rolling several times.
Yosmany Mayeta urged the authorities of Santiago de Cuba and the Attorney General's Office of the Republic of Cuba to intervene in the case to take appropriate measures against the surviving driver and alleged cause of the incident.
The fatal incident occurred around 3:50 AM on September 29 when the government vehicle collided with the horse-drawn carriage from behind in an attempt to overtake, in the Santa Teresa neighborhood, in El Caney.
At the scene, one of the chauffeurs died instantly while the other brother was urgently transferred with serious injuries to the Juan Bruno Zayas Clinical Surgical Hospital.
According to some people, the driver of the car was speeding when he collided with the vehicle.
So far, the identity of the driver of the Prosecutor's car has not been revealed, nor whether the horse or horses pulling the carriage survived.
In another fatal incident that occurred recently in Santiago de Cuba, two men died in a motorcycle accident last Thursday near the Cubalse store located on the El Caney road.
According to official statistics, there was a 13% decrease in traffic accidents (543 less) in Cuba during the first half of the year compared to the same period in 2023. However, incidents on the country's roads and streets do not cease, and the frequency with which they occur and their serious consequences are concerning.
