The Cuban leader Miguel Díaz-Canel met in Mexico City with the new Mexican president Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo, who assumed the leadership of the Aztec government on the morning of this Tuesday, October 1st.

On his X account, the leader of the Caribbean island stated that he reiterated his congratulations "on behalf of the people and the government of Cuba," as well as wishing "great success in the construction of the second level of the Fourth Transformation of public life in Mexico."

Díaz-Canel expressed his interest in "continuing to strengthen bilateral ties and common interests for the development of our nations."

The Cuban leader arrived in Mexico last Sunday, heading a delegation that also includes his wife, the non-first lady and official of the Ministry of Culture, Lis Cuesta.

This Tuesday, he was among those present at Sheinbaum's swearing-in ceremony, who takes power after winning the elections on June 2 and following the conclusion of Andrés Manuel López Obrador's (AMLO) six-year term, who also bid farewell to the attending leaders on Monday.

During a meeting with diplomatic staff from the Cuban Embassy in Mexico, Díaz-Canel praised the Aztec nation and the outgoing president. “This is an important country, a strategic country for Cuba,” he said.

During AMLO's six-year term, which began in December 2018, the Cuban leader visited Mexico officially on at least five occasions, while the Mexican leader only went to Cuba once, in his capacity as president of the United Mexican States.
