The iconic Cuban singer Omara Portuondo, known as the "Diva of the Buena Vista Social Club," has decided to retire permanently from the stage after an episode of fatigue and disorientation she experienced during her performance at the Palau de la Música in Barcelona on Wednesday, October 2.
The announcement was made by his son and manager, Ariel Jiménez Portuondo, in a statement on social media in which he expresses gratitude for the expressions of affection received and provides details about the artist's health status.
At 93 years old, Omara has continued to offer sporadic performances despite her advanced age, with limited and carefully planned presentations to ensure her well-being.
However, during her performance of the classic "Quizás, quizás, quizás," by Osvaldo Farrés, at the Crüilla Festival, she showed signs of fatigue that forced the show to be stopped, leading to the decision for her definitive retirement from international stages, explained Jiménez Portuondo.
The statement clarified that, although the Failde Orchestra continued the show professionally, the incident led the artist's family and team to re-evaluate her future.
On October 6, during a presentation in Budapest, a tribute will be held in her honor, although Portuondo will not sing.
This will be the official closing of an extraordinary career, after decades of contributions to Cuban and world music.
Despite her retirement from the stage, Omara Portuondo will continue to rehearse and record in her studio as long as her health allows, thus keeping her connection to the music that has been her life alive, the publication details.
In 2022, the singer announced her last artistic tour to the most distant countries of Cuba, but clarified that she had not definitively said goodbye to the stage.
"For me, singing is living; it's my way of being. If you ask me about my favorite place, it will always be the stage, the song I sing, the next applause. As long as I have a voice and someone wants to hear me, let me sing," declared the legendary artist, known as "La novia del feeling," in a Facebook post.
