The United States Coast Guard (USCG) rescued four people and a dog who were on a plane that crashed on Tuesday in Tampa Bay.
"A crew from the USCG Air Station in Miami headed to provide assistance after a plane crashed into Tampa Bay with four people and reportedly a dog on board," the agency said on its Twitter account.
"Everyone was rescued from the water with the help of good Samaritans and the firefighters from St. Petersburg," he added.
The plane sank in the water in front of Albert Whitted airport, another tweet specified.
In a video shared by the Coast Guard, Lieutenant Chad D. Paulson, co-pilot of an HC-144 Ocean Sentry plane from the Miami Air Station, recounted his experience in helping the four people after their plane crashed into the water.
The hurricane Milton is expected to enter the Tampa Bay area in the coming hours, and the effects are already being felt; this may have caused the aircraft to go down.
Milton continues its advance towards Florida as a "catastrophic" category 5 hurricane, with maximum sustained winds of 260 km/h (160 mph).
At 5:00 a.m. CDT on Wednesday, the eye of the hurricane was about 255 km (160 miles) west of Dry Tortugas and about 485 km (300 miles) southwest of the city of Tampa.
