Conor McGregor stirs controversy before UFC 308

In the midst of the growing anticipation for Ilia Topuria’s featherweight title defense at UFC 308 against Max Holloway, the always controversial Conor McGregor has stirred controversy again with his statements. The Irishman not only recalled his success betting on Spanish athletes but also sent a subtle jab at Topuria, questioning his "Spanishness."

McGregor boasts about his winning bets.

In a recent video, McGregor shared that he has won large sums of money betting on figures like Carlos Alcaraz and the Spanish national football team, but when referring to Topuria, he was clear: "I would bet on Ilia Topuria, but he is not Spanish. Let's be realistic, I am more Spanish than Ilia." These words, spoken in a joking tone, have quickly generated a stir, especially as Topuria is at the peak of his career and ready for one of the most important fights of his life.

The tension between McGregor and Topuria is not new, and with UFC 308 around the corner, the Irishman's statements add more fuel to the fire.

Conor McGregor has continued to make headlines in recent years, both for his performance in the UFC and for various scandals. In August 2023, Cuban-American fighter Jorge Masvidal challenged him to a street fight, calling him a "bitch," highlighting the media significance McGregor still holds inside and outside the octagon. Additionally, in June 2023, McGregor was accused of sexual assault following an incident during the NBA finals, adding more controversy to his career, along with accidentally knocking out the Miami Heat's mascot.
