Dr. Elicio de Jesús Rodríguez Martí, a renowned proctologist from Santiago, passed away this Sunday after a brief and sudden illness.
The "Saturnino Lora Torres" Provincial Clinical Surgical Teaching Hospital announced on Facebook that Rodríguez, born on December 19, 1945, and considered one of the pioneers of Coloproctology in eastern Cuba after 1959, left an indelible mark on Cuban medicine.
Additionally, he considered that the outstanding physician was part of a generation of eminent professors, such as Ciro Dionisio Carrero Fernández and Isaac Jorge Polo Kessel.
Kind, with a cheerful spirit and a constant smile, Dr. Rodríguez was known both for his clinical skill and his human charisma. Colleagues, friends, and patients remember him with fondness and gratitude.
The Provincial Hospital of Santiago de Cuba shared an emotional message on social media expressing their condolences and highlighting their legacy: “Rest in peace, may the earth be light upon your body, and may the good light illuminate your path to heaven.”
Similarly, the Dr. Juan Bruno Zayas Alfonso General Hospital, the institution where the deceased physician spent much of his professional life, remembered the work of the doctor on Facebook and expressed its condolences to his family.
"In the morning session, a minute of silence was observed to remember Dr. Elicio de Jesús Rodríguez Martí, an icon of Santiago proctology who passed away on October 13," the institution pointed out in another publication.
