Several streets in Santiago de Cuba were blocked on Wednesday morning due to fallen trees and branches, caused by the heavy rains and strong winds that hit the city.
Aris Arias Batalla, provincial head of Operations and Relief, informed via Facebook that, due to the weather situation, from the early hours of the morning, the workers of Comunales Services were forced to clear the roads by removing fallen branches and trees to restore traffic in the city.
In addition, it was reported that the obstructions occurred on the central Avenida de Céspedes, in the Sueño neighborhood, and other important streets of the city.
In another post, Arias reported that the intense rains were caused by a cyclonic circulation at altitudes of nine to twelve kilometers located south of Haiti, the passage of an active tropical wave over the Caribbean Sea, and all of this combined with abundant moisture content.
In addition, it was reported that in the last 12 hours, there were rains in the central and eastern parts of the country, “the highest accumulation was recorded at La Gran Piedra, Santiago de Cuba, with 98.8 millimeters in less than six hours, qualifying as locally intense rain.”
The Forecast Center of the Institute of Meteorology indicated on its website that this Wednesday afternoon it will become cloudy throughout the national territory with showers, rain, and thunderstorms, with the possibility of extending into the night.
A few days ago, the rains, winds, and sea surges associated with Hurricane Milton caused flooding on the southern coast of Mayabeque.
In Havana, flooding was reported along the Malecón and low-lying areas of El Vedado due to the intensity of the cyclone.
