The government will only deliver 345 grams of chicken per person in the municipalities of Santiago de Cuba.

A ship with chicken supplies arrived at the port of Santiago, and with it, the distribution of the product to the entire population in the province will be covered, said the regime.

The Cuban government announced that the next distribution of chicken in the province of Santiago de Cuba will be limited, providing only 345 grams per person in the municipalities of the province, while in the provincial capital, one pound will be distributed per person.

This measure responds to the food shortage affecting the island, exacerbated by the decrease in imports and logistical difficulties.

The distribution will begin this Wednesday in the municipality of Santiago de Cuba, confirmed the Provincial Government in a television program.

However, it was confirmed that a ship with supplies of chicken has arrived at the port of Santiago, and with it, the distribution of the product to the entire population in the province can be covered.

In addition, two extra pounds will be distributed to pregnant women as part of medical diets, and special diets will be guaranteed for 173 children with chronic illnesses.

The news arrives amidst a growing sense of desperation among the population, which has been lining up for long periods to buy chicken in the streets.

This Tuesday, hundreds of people from Santiago gathered at various points in the city, waiting for hours under the sun to obtain a pound of chicken, according to journalist Yosmany Mayeta.

The authorities stated that there will be no toothpaste in the upcoming distribution due to a lack of raw materials for its production, while the compote will only be available for children between 1 and 3 years old.

The shortage of chicken, which was once a relatively accessible product in the Cuban market, has worsened in recent years, affecting both the regulated basket and the foreign exchange markets.

Recent data from the U.S. Department of Agriculture revealed a decline in chicken imports to Cuba between January and July 2024, which has further exacerbated the food situation in the country.
