The general blackout that occurred at noon on Friday in Cuba also affected the circuit that feeds the main tourist hub of the Island, leaving several hotels in Varadero in the dark due to malfunctions in their self-generation systems.
The situation was reported on social media by users who claimed to be at the famous resort and to have witnessed the prevailing darkness in some of its tourist facilities.
"For those who said no... I'm in a hotel in Varadero and they cut the power. Now this is really ugly," stated a Cuban on Facebook, confirming the testimonies of other users who also reported blackouts in their hotels.
Power outages in hotels caused bewilderment and complaints from many tourists. "At the Meliá las Américas, there is no electricity," said an internet user.
"Yes, Varadero is in blackout. They are working with the generators. Confirmed, I live in Matanzas," another one stated.
"Varadero tourist area in total blackout. The dollars are gone"; "Blackout in Varadero hotels. It's the last straw. And huge complaints from tourists," said other profiles on Facebook that claimed to have reliable information about the unusual event.
This Friday at noon, the Ministry of Energy and Mines (MINEM) of Cuba reported a total disconnection of the National Electroenergetic System (SEN) after the Guiteras thermoelectric plant went out of service.
"At 11:07 this morning, due to the conditions in which the SEN is operating, a total disconnection occurred after the shutdown of the Antonio Guiteras thermoelectric plant. The Electric Union is working to restore the Electric System," the UNE published on its social media.
In an emergency appearance, the director of electricity at MINEM, Lázaro Guerra Hernández, stated that there was no defined time for the complete restoration of the service, although efforts were being made to reconnect the electrical system as soon as possible.
This Saturday morning, slight progress had been made towards supplying electricity to the thermal power plants for their start-up.
“At this moment, we have microsystems in all provinces except for Artemisa, which have limited power and reach consumers close to them,” Guerra Hernández stated.
However, before 7:00 a.m., the SEN completely collapsed again, undoing the minimal progress made to restore it.
At the beginning of September, a supposed electrical discharge caused a massive blackout in Varadero, which was left completely in the dark. However, the electric company of Matanzas managed to resolve it "in a few minutes."
This was reported on his social media by the official journalist José Miguel Solís, who referred to the information provided via Telegram by the state-owned company responsible for the service in the renowned tourist area.
As the premier tourist destination of the Cuban regime, it is extremely rare for power outages to occur in Varadero. The connection to the national electric power system (SEN) of the resort is reinforced by the private electricity supply it receives from the Energás Varadero plant.
In September 2022, after the massive blackout that left the entire Island in the dark, the circuit that provides electricity to Varadero struggled to recover due to the technical problems caused at this plant by the total collapse of the SEN.
