CTE Antonio Guiteras is back online, but with limited capacity.

The entry of the Guiteras is a boost in energy generation, according to the authorities.

The Antonio Guiteras Thermoelectric Power Plant (CTE), in the province of Matanzas, is back online, according to a brief message from the Cuban Electric Company.

The process is in synchronization with the information previously provided by the Minister of Energy and Mines, Vicente de La O Levy, who said that this power unit would come into operation for the Presidency of Cuba.

"Starting around two in the afternoon, there will be another significant improvement, because then we will begin to work with the CTE Antonio Guiteras, which is ready, waiting for the order to proceed slowly," Levy said in statements to the government portal.

In the Midday News, engineer Lázaro Guerra Hernández, director of Electric Power at the Ministry of Energy and Mines, confirmed the startup of Guiteras, although he clarified that it “will operate limited to 120 MW.”

The official clarified that "even if the system is interconnected, there will not be sufficient availability to meet all the demands," citing issues with fuel supply.

For his part, de La O Levy commented in his intervention that with the entry of Guiteras, "a significant capacity will be added," along with the generation from Hanabanilla (Villa Clara) and the plants in the central and eastern provinces, transferring about 200 MW to those regions.

De la O Levy said that after the last power system failure, which occurred on Sunday afternoon, they immediately began working on the recovery.

"We followed a similar procedure to the previous one, but with a calmer approach, reactivating the Energás units. Currently, almost all the Energás units are synchronized, with the exception of one. This allowed us to restore service in Havana and activate the barges in the Bay. Additionally, we managed to synchronize the Mariel site, which also contributed to improving the situation," he described.

He added that they have also incorporated the CTE Nuevitas, which has improved the situation in the eastern part of the country, the region most affected so far, especially due to the passage of tropical storm Oscar through that area.

Since last Friday at noon, with the departure of the CTE Guiteras, Cubans have been experiencing a widespread blackout on the island, with intermittent service and some without power for more than three days.
