The president Miguel Díaz-Canel informed this Tuesday on social media that, during an extraordinary meeting of the National Defense Council (CDN), it was confirmed that the number of fatalities due to Hurricane Oscar in eastern Cuba has risen to seven.

On the social network X, Díaz-Canel noted that "we learned of the loss of one more person in Imías, bringing the total to seven victims of this phenomenon," which made landfall in Guantánamo on Sunday and later downgraded to a tropical storm.

The president, who had informed hours earlier about the death of six people in the municipality of San Antonio del Sur, also expressed his sorrow for the situation, stating: “We deeply regret this loss and extend our heartfelt condolences to family and friends.”

The list of victims of Hurricane Oscar includes a Cuban mother and her five-year-old daughter, who are presumed to have died during the early morning while the cyclone was hitting the eastern region.

In his publication, Diaz-Canel also emphasized the importance of assessing the impacts in each area and planning the actions that will be carried out as soon as possible to initiate the recovery phase.

In addition, he emphasized that the necessary resources will be allocated to protect the population and repair the damage as quickly as possible.

On the other hand, he emphasized the need to coordinate efforts effectively to ensure that aid reaches the most affected areas as promptly as possible.

He emphasized that each donation is vital at this time and reiterated that the government will use the available resources to alleviate the situation of the affected population.

Currently, the municipality of Imías and other towns in the province of Guantánamo remain cut off due to the severe flooding that has occurred in that area.

The intense rains also caused significant river flooding, which in turn resulted in damage in the eastern town.

Finally, in the extraordinary meeting of the CDN, the president also reported that the recovery of the electricity system is at 70% of its restoration, and he presumes that the country has "the potential to continue progressing."

He also said that he was instructed to "prioritize actions in the most lagging provinces and quickly reverse the impacts of the hurricane."
