“How long?”: Cuban in Uruguay expresses his anguish over the situation on the island

"The sweetest thing, if you go out to the street, you know they’ll arrest you."

A Cuban living in Uruguay (@yudielkaren1) lamented in an emotional TikTok video that has quickly begun to generate reactions about the terrible situation in Cuba.

In the video, where he is seen sitting on the grass with his mother, the young man expresses the frustration and pain of those who, although they have left the island, continue to feel the suffering of their family and friends who remain there.

"When we came here, Cuba was bad, and now we are wondering how much longer this will last," says @yudielkaren1, referring to the profound crisis on the island, which now affects not only the economy but is worsened by the lack of electricity, water, and food. "It’s total blackout, there is no water, there is no food, there is nothing, and on top of that, we are giving wood for people to cook. It's shameful, it’s the last straw," she adds in desperation.

His mother also appears in the video, pointing out how difficult it is to be away from the island but still suffer for what is happening there. "We are here, but we are suffering as if we were there because it’s not easy. It really isn’t easy," she comments. The young man adds, "it's a headache, an abuse of what there is with Cubans, that doesn't even have a name anymore."

The video has generated a wave of comments, some supportive and others questioning the causes of the crisis. One user pointed out: "The best thing you could do is leave Cuba, but the most important thing was bringing your mother with you so she can be free and not go through that situation. I know it's hard, but enjoy that you have your mother with you." Another commented with frustration: "It's the fault of the Cuban government, the United States has nothing to do with this, God!"

Some users were more critical of the Cuban regime, while others offered prayers for the situation on the island: "I ask God that the people of Cuba and also Venezuela can live in peace, calmly, without going hungry or lacking light or water," expressed another follower of the creator.

There were also those who made comparisons with other countries. One comment said: "Don't forget that Venezuela was the same and today it is better than Uruguay and Argentina," while another insisted on collective action: "Only a few go out to the streets, that's why they get arrested. The whole people must go out. They can't arrest everyone."

In addition, several people outside of Cuba shared their empathy for the difficult situation the island is going through. "Today, sitting outside, I was telling that to my sister and daughter, we are here eating ice cream and in Cuba they have neither light nor food. Keep in mind, I am Uruguayan, but it hurts to see so much injustice in the world," commented a user from Uruguay. Another added: "Strength to our Cuban brothers, it hurts us because you are already a little bit Uruguayan."

The electrical situation in Cuba remains critical, with power outages affecting most provinces, as recently reported by the Electric Company of Havana. Many areas, such as Santiago de Cuba and Holguín, continue to experience blackouts due to system instability and high demand. In Havana, multiple breakdowns have been recorded in several municipalities, further worsening the landscape that Cubans face day to day.
