The devastation caused by Hurricane Oscar has left the Cuban province of Guantánamo in a critical situation, with several families missing and others who have lost their homes and all their belongings.

Daireli Ribero Matos, a resident of San Antonio del Sur, the municipality most affected by the storm and where seven deaths have been officially reported, showed the remains of her house in a Facebook post where she stated, “It is sad what has happened to us, some have lost their lives and others have lost everything.”

Rescue efforts continue in that municipality and in Imías, where entire families are reported missing after landslides and rising rivers, residents say, although the regime has only confirmed seven deaths.

Emilio Almaguer, an activist in Baracoa, reported that the Cajobabo bridge has collapsed, isolating entire communities. "It is impossible to reach Imías and San Antonio. The situation is critical, the river has invaded all the land," he stated.

Meanwhile, the survivors face a lack of electricity, food, and drinking water. Yamilka Lafita, an activist in Havana, is searching for news about her brother and nephew, who went missing while helping neighbors escape. "No one came to help them in the critical moment," she lamented.

Miguel Ángel López Herrera, another activist in Guantánamo, confirmed that military helicopters were flying over the region, but the official number of missing persons has yet to be disclosed.

The day before, a resident confronted the Cuban leader Miguel Díaz-Canel and demanded that the government abandoned him alone with 29 children who nearly drowned after the sudden rise of a river. During the visit that the official made to the affected area, another woman also demanded that she and her young child had been without water for days.
