A young man from Santiago, who uses his income to care for his sick parents, reached out on social media for help in acquiring a pair of shoes, and his request received strong support from the community.
Rosa Bella explained in the Facebook group "Bazar Santiago de Cuba" that the young man to whom she donated several pairs of shoes does not suffer from any psychiatric condition or illness; rather, he works honestly and dedicates his salary to taking care of his mother and his father, who is unwell.
"I only wanted to help him, and it was a blessing," she commented, adding that she always shares photos of the people she supports, so that her followers and supporters can see the transparency of her work.
He also clarified that he never requests money or cards, and in this case, he only asked for some shoes, which he was able to obtain thanks to the support of the community.
Bella also clarified that when she posts a request for help, anyone interested should contact her directly, as she is the one who engages on social media and personally handles the distribution of donations to those in need.
He explained that he does this to prevent anyone from taking advantage of vulnerable individuals, as his work has always been transparent.
A few days ago, Bella had posted in the Facebook group "Bazar Santiago de Cuba" a message explaining that the young man had asked her for help in finding a group on social media that could donate a pair of sneakers or shoes in size 39, as his were in very poor condition.
According to him, the little the young man earns goes towards food for himself and his parents, so he made an appeal to anyone who could provide assistance, even with a pair of used shoes.
Solidarity, an inherent quality among many Cubans, has grown even stronger in recent times as the crisis has deepened and following the impact of weather events like Hurricane Oscar.
Recently, a Cuban posted a message offering his personal car, a Moskvitch, to make a trip to San Antonio del Sur to deliver donations to those affected by Hurricane Oscar.
"I’m offering my car to take donations to San Antonio del Sur tomorrow. 51463617," wrote Wilmer Fernández in the Facebook group Revolico Guantanamero.
In addition, the activists of the solidarity initiative "Huellas" launched a campaign on social media to provide assistance to those affected by Hurricane Oscar in eastern Cuba.
In a message directed to all Cubans, regardless of ideology or beliefs, Johanna Jolá Álvarez, the project leader, called for solidarity through Facebook in light of the devastation left by the cyclone, which has deprived thousands of families of their basic material possessions.
