The National Defense Civil Staff has raised the death toll to eight and reported that two more individuals remain missing in the province of Guantánamo following Hurricane Oscar's passage through eastern Cuba.

The hurricane caused severe flooding in four municipalities in the region, particularly impacting San Antonio del Sur, where six fatalities had already been confirmed, according to a report from the state agency cited by the official newspaper Granma.

This Wednesday, the entity reported that there are currently eight confirmed deaths and two missing persons, as well as two minors recovering from the serious injuries sustained during the hurricane.

Among the victims, six had already been reported: Francisco Colombia Matos, 92 years old; Esmeraldo Noa Fiffe, 82; Antolino Areas Domínguez, 84; Alexander Saben Matos, 42; Iriannis Labañino Domínguez, 31; and Liz Anyi Elíaz Labañino, just 5 years old. Additionally, María Martha Osorio Matos, 81, and Ramón Díaz Matos, 86, both from San Antonio del Sur and Imías, respectively, have been added to the list.

During the passage of the hurricane, two children were also reported injured. Yodelmis Furones Matos, a six-year-old resident of Baracoa, was urgently airlifted to the Doctor Antonio María Véguez Children's Hospital in Santiago de Cuba, where he is in stable condition. The other child, Abraham Daniel González Hernández, a 12-year-old, suffered a leg injury after being swept away by the waters and is currently recovering at the Pedro Agustín Pérez Pediatric Hospital in Guantánamo.

Both are out of danger, states the official report.

Authorities continue to search for Kaliannis Hernández Urgelléz, 35, and Orlenis Gamboa Pérez, 42, who have been reported missing in the same area.

The Civil Defense reports that security measures have been implemented and assistance is being provided to the affected communities while the damage caused by the weather phenomenon is assessed, following which rain and flooding have persisted.

However, the regime has been heavily criticized for leaving the population unprotected amid a massive blackout that coincided with the storm's passage. Evidence of this is that out of the total of eight deaths, five were elderly individuals over 80 years old, and two were a young mother and her five-year-old daughter.
