Cuban Washer: A Woman's Creative Method for Washing Clothes During Blackouts

Cuban woman creates handmade method to wash clothes during power outages, using a bucket, a stick, and a plastic bottle.

In response to the prolonged blackouts affecting Cuba, some women are coming up with ingenious solutions to carry out everyday tasks, such as doing laundry.

A recent video posted on TikTok showcases the effort and creativity of a woman who, lacking access to an electric washing machine due to power outages, devised a handmade method to wash her children's clothes in a bucket.

The "invention," as she calls it, consists of a 20-liter bucket filled with water and detergent, into which she places the laundry along with a wooden stick to which she has fitted a plastic knob with holes to facilitate the movement of the water.

The woman repeatedly pushes this stick against the clothes, mimicking the motion of a washing machine.

The effort is exhausting, and the process requires a great deal of patience and physical strength.

Despite the fatigue that exercise brings her, she insists that there is no other option for keeping her clothes clean amidst the power outages.

The video serves as a reminder of the challenges faced by many women in the country, who, in addition to dealing with shortages of basic goods, now have to find solutions for even the most routine tasks due to power outages lasting up to 23 hours in some areas.

The "new Cuban washing machine," as it has been called, is also a testament to the resilience of Cuban women.
