The Cuban government confirmed that one person was injured and two others suffered heart attacks following a false alarm regarding the breach of the San Antonio de los Baños dam in Guantánamo.
In the podcast "Desde La Presidencia," which focuses on discussing the impact of Hurricane Oscar in the mentioned eastern province, information was provided about the victims of the false rumor that caused panic among the population.
The event occurred just a few days after the municipality of San Antonio del Sur was devastated by the hurricane (seven residents died due to the flooding). People left their homes, taking to the streets while pushing the elderly in wheelchairs and running in search of shelter or climbing onto trucks to evacuate the area.
The leader Díaz-Canel, as is his custom, blamed the chaos on the "counterrevolution" and independent media.
The false alarm regarding the breakage of the San Antonio dam's curtains resulted in the deaths of at least three people, as revealed on social media by Daniel Ross Diéguez, an audiovisual producer who documented the situation of the residents in the areas most affected by the hurricane.
Amid the crisis caused by the hurricane in that municipality of Guantánamo, the local population panicked after a rumor spread regarding a possible break in the dam, which at that time was holding 12.7 million cubic meters of water, putting it at 86% of its capacity.
Local authorities later confirmed that Oscar did not cause any damage to the Pozo Azul dam in the Guantanamo Valley of Caujerí.
The confusion also impacted essential services and workers from other provinces who were trying to evacuate the area.
Daniel Ross Diéguez himself described in a Facebook live how he experienced the moment.
"Many trucks started to turn around, hurriedly signaling. That was the first warning. Vehicles from ETECSA, churches, workers from other provinces, and perhaps embassies were arriving. I remember a jeep packed with people, and that’s when we started to get concerned. The cars were overflowing. We understood that something serious had happened. Then a car stopped, which was carrying several people, and it gave us the news," he explained.
Subsequently, the government announced that those responsible for spreading the false news will be investigated and prosecuted.
