The Forecast Center of the Institute of Meteorology (INSMET) issued a warning this Sunday regarding the presence of a trough in the lower levels of the troposphere over the Dominican Republic, which has caused showers and thunderstorms in the eastern region of Cuba.
In a note published on Facebook, the Forecast Center reported that the provinces most affected by the rains have been Guantánamo, with rainfall totals of 57.8 millimeters in Jamal and 63.7 millimeters in Palenque de Yateras. Additionally, precipitation was reported in the province of Camagüey during the early hours of the morning.
INSMET highlighted that this system will continue to cause rain, primarily along the northern coast and in Guantánamo, throughout this Sunday.
In its television segment, the center reported that there will be chances of rain in the northern areas of Holguín and Las Tunas, "which will extend into the interior and south of this region in the afternoon."
In addition, it was noted that in the west and central regions, the morning will be mostly clear, except in areas along the northern coast where it will be partly cloudy. However, "in the afternoon, much of these regions will be partly cloudy, with some localities experiencing overcast skies and isolated rain."
On the other hand, INSMET reported that there is an area of low pressure in the southern Caribbean Sea, featuring abundant cloud cover and thunderstorms. While still disorganized, it has a high probability of developing into a tropical cyclone within the next 24 hours.
In the rest of the Atlantic Ocean, Caribbean Sea, and Gulf of Mexico, no cyclonic development is expected in the next 12 to 24 hours, the monitoring center indicated.
The National Hurricane Center (NHC) reported this Sunday that a low-pressure system located in the southwest Caribbean has a high likelihood (90 percent) of developing into a tropical depression in the coming days.
The NHC warned that those in the western Caribbean Sea should closely monitor the progress of this system, as tropical storm watches or warnings could be issued later today or tonight for some areas in the region.
In light of the intense rains affecting eastern Cuba, the National General Staff of Civil Defense decided to implement the Informative Phase throughout the region this Saturday.
The phase came into effect at 10:00 am for the provinces of Guantánamo, Santiago de Cuba, Holguín, Granma, and Las Tunas.
On Friday, the
The organization emphasized that, regardless of cyclonic development, rain and thunderstorms are imminent, especially in the eastern region, which has already experienced significant rainfall in the last days of October.
