The Electric Company of Havana announced this Tuesday that there will be more power outages in the capital of Cuba due to the sudden shutdown of Block 4 at the "Carlos Manuel de Céspedes" Thermal Power Plant.
Through the social network Facebook, the entity announced that "Block #3 will be affected from 3:00 PM until after the peak hours at 6:30 PM. The disruption in Block #4 will continue until 6:30 PM."
He also requested that the population use electricity wisely to reduce consumption in the province, avoid overloads on the networks, and prevent service interruptions.
These cuts are in addition to those announced by the company for today:
Blocks 1 and 2: The service interruption will take place from 10:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.
Block 4: The suspension will take place from 2:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.
Last Sunday, Cuba's Electric Union announced that the issue with this unit had been resolved: “Block 4 of the Cienfuegos Thermoelectric Company has already ignited its boiler and will synchronize with the National Electric System around midnight. We continue the fight,” it stated on its social media.
All of this is happening as Tropical Storm Rafael is expected to strengthen into a Category 1 or 2 hurricane within the next few hours before reaching Cuban territory, a situation that raises even more concern among citizens regarding the fragility of the island's electrical system.
The fragile and inadequate service that has been restored following the recent total collapse once again faces the threat of meteorological factors such as hurricane-strength winds and rainfall, which could jeopardize the country's electrical infrastructure.
As Rafael moves towards the west of Cuba and continues to strengthen, the population's fear grows of a repeat of what happened with Hurricane Oscar, which struck the country during a massive blackout that lasted more than three days, leaving the vast majority without electricity, television, or internet, with communication limited to radio.
