Hurricane Rafael will cross Cuba as a highly intense hurricane, according to the forecast from the National Hurricane Center (NHC) of the United States.
According to the latest official bulletin issued this Wednesday at 10:00 AM (Eastern Time), potentially deadly storm surges, damaging hurricane-strength winds, and flash floods are expected in parts of western Cuba.
At that time, the center of the phenomenon was located near latitude 21.4 North, longitude 81.9 West, and is moving northwest at about 14 mph (22 km/h).
It is expected to move northwest over the next day and then make a gradual turn toward the west-northwest in the Gulf of Mexico. It should pass near or east of the Isle of Youth in the coming hours and make landfall in western Cuba later this Wednesday.
The maximum sustained winds have increased to around 110 mph (175 km/h), with stronger gusts, and additional strengthening is expected. They extend up to 15 miles (30 km) from the center.
