Latino in the U.S. showcases his work for $16 an hour and sparks debate: What do you do and how much are you paid?

Is $16 an hour enough in the U.S.? Video featuring a Latino immigrant sparks debate on wages and costs.

@josueperniaa, a content creator on TikTok, decided to share a glimpse of his work life in the United States, where he works in the kitchen of a restaurant preparing fried chicken, sandwiches, and attending to customers. In the video, he reveals that his hourly wage is $16, which he considers suitable, since it is not only a "relatively easy" job but also allows him to save on breakfast and lunch expenses, as he can eat on site. Concluding his post, Josue asks, “How much do you earn at your job and what do you do?” This sparked a flurry of responses from users sharing their own work experiences and salaries in the United States and other countries.

One of the most popular comments comes from a user who earns $24 an hour and jokes, “I spend all my time in the bathroom.” Another user mentions earning $28 in construction, but after subtracting expenses, he ends up with nearly the same amount. A follower who makes $25 an hour shares that his rent is $1,700 for a one-bedroom apartment, which Josue finds “too much.” There was also someone who shared their challenges, like a worker at a Mexican restaurant earning $12 an hour and responsible for serving food, while another person cleans houses and charges between $25 and $40 an hour, depending on the hours worked.

Some pointed out that Josue could look for something better. One user commented, “They pay you very little, my friend; there are places that pay $20 or $22 in restaurants,” to which he replied that it depends on the state and each person's expenses, like rent. Other comments reflect the wide range of incomes and situations faced by workers in different sectors: “I earn $52.25 an hour in construction in Las Vegas,” “$16 an hour at Chipotle,” “I work in planting and earn $15 an hour,” or “I work at Amazon for $24 and I also save on breakfast and lunch.” Even followers from Venezuela and other countries shared their salaries and expressed their desire to work in the United States.

For some, the benefit of not spending on daily meals is a significant advantage. “Congratulations, my friend, it’s a blessing to save on lunch every day,” wrote one user, while another pointed out that in his case, lunch alone costs him $15 a day. In a different tone, one user advised Josue to take care and avoid eating fried chicken every day, as it could have long-term effects on his health. Josue replied that he doesn’t necessarily eat only chicken, as there are more options at his workplace.

In the end, this debate made it clear that everyone experiences their work life differently and that many are considering seeking better opportunities or relocating to improve their circumstances. What about you? What do you think of the salary and conditions of @josueperniaa? Do you think it's worth it for the savings on food, or would you also look for something better?

What do you think?
