The leader Miguel Díaz-Canel, following the earthquakes registered this Sunday that shook the population in the eastern region, urged the residents of the affected areas via his social media to evacuate the buildings and stay in open spaces.
On the social network X, Díaz-Canel stated: "We ask our population in those areas to go out and stay in open places."
Additionally, he noted: “We began assessing the damage to start the recovery process. The first and most essential thing is to save lives.”
The official also reported that "there have been landslides, damage to homes, and disruptions to the electrical grid," as a result of the two earthquakes recorded this Sunday.
According to Díaz-Canel, "from the National Defense Council we communicated with the first secretaries of the Party in Santiago de Cuba and Granma, provinces affected by the recent earthquakes."
Dr. Enrique Diego Arango Arias, head of the National Seismological Service of Cuba at the National Center for Seismological Research (CENAIS), warned on his social media that the situation is quite complicated following the occurrence of two earthquakes this Sunday southeast of Pilón in Granma province.
On Facebook, Arango noted that "the situation is quite complicated; there are many reports of damage in Pilón, we need any damage reports you may have."
In this regard, state journalist Lázaro Manuel Alonso stated on Facebook, citing CENAIS, that "authorities in the east are advising the public to remain alert for aftershocks from these earthquakes and to follow safety measures."
"Preliminary damages are concentrated in the southern municipalities of Santiago and Granma, primarily affecting the electrical grid and housing, and there have also been land slides," noted Alonso.
Additionally, he emphasized that there is no tsunami threat in Santiago de Cuba or in the eastern part of the country.
At 10:50 AM this Sunday, an earthquake with a magnitude of 6.0 occurred, with its epicenter located 48 kilometers southeast of Pilón, in Granma province.
Then, at 12:49 PM, an aftershock was recorded with a magnitude of 6.7 on the Richter scale, surpassing the initial earthquake.
