Tom Homan returns to the government of elected President Donald Trump. Formerly the acting director of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) during the last term that the magnate held the White House, he will now serve as the "border czar."
"I am pleased to announce that the former director of ICE and an unwavering proponent of border control, Tom Homan, will be joining the Trump administration; in charge of the borders of our nation," Trump wrote on his Truth Social site on Sunday night.
The expectations for Homan's joining of Trump’s second administration were met, particularly concerning border-related duties, with an emphasis on Trump's commitment to initiate the largest deportation operation in the country's history.
The elected leader confirmed this in his announcement. In addition to overseeing the southern and northern borders and “maritime and air security,” Trump stated that Homan “will be in charge of the entire deportation of illegal aliens back to their home countries,” which is a central part of his agenda.
Homan served as the head of ICE during Trump's first term and is regarded as the "father" of the strategy that resulted in the separation of nearly 4,000 migrant children from their parents, who were left in detention. The scandal escalated when it was revealed that the government did not know the whereabouts of many of these minors nor had a reunification plan in place.
He is also one of the authors of what is known as Project 2025, which Trump distanced himself from, but whose lines of action, analysts warn, his administration would follow starting January 20, 2025, when he assumes the presidency.
The idea behind Project 2025 is to give Trump more power; it includes plans within the Department of Homeland Security to carry out more deportations and deploy more military personnel to the southern border of the United States. It even grants ICE agents the authority to enter areas such as schools and churches in search of undocumented individuals.
Last October, Homan stated in an interview with CBS that there had been no deportation raids during Joe Biden's administration, warning that this measure could resume during Donald Trump's next term as president.
