Earthquakes continue in Eastern Cuba: Seismologists register 2,665 aftershocks

Cuban seismologists have recorded 2,665 aftershocks as of this Thursday, which have damaged 3,518 homes in Granma.

The National Center for Seismological Research (CENAIS) reported this Thursday that, following the earthquakes that occurred on Sunday southeast of Pilón in Granma Province, a total of 2,665 aftershocks have been recorded.

"In total, 2,665 aftershocks have been recorded following the 6.0 and 6.7 earthquakes that occurred on November 10, of which approximately 90 were perceptible," stated the bulletin published by CENAIS on its website.

According to the report, between yesterday, Wednesday, and today, Thursday, up to 5:59 AM, 404 earthquakes were recorded with magnitudes ranging from 1.1 to 3.7.

The main impacts caused by this seismic activity are concentrated in Granma province, where at least 3,518 homes have reported some type of damage.

Luis Roja Yero, the technical deputy director of the Provincial Housing Directorate in Granma, reported to the newspaper La Demajagua that there have been 513 partial collapses recorded, of which 54 are total collapses, 38 are complete roof failures, and 313 are partial roof falls.

It was indicated that the municipality of Pilón has the highest number of affected homes, totaling 830, followed by Campechuela with 759, Bartolomé Masó with 663, Buey Arriba with 445, Media Luna with 337, and Manzanillo with 248 damaged houses. In the other areas, the number of damages is lower.

"According to architects and specialists, studies are being conducted in coastal areas to assess the feasibility of the land for housing construction and the level of danger posed by such developments during events like those that occurred on November 10," the news portal reported.

One of the state-owned properties severely affected was the Juan Vitalio Acuña basic secondary school in the municipality of Pilón, Granma, which was forced to close its doors due to the significant damage caused by the strong earthquakes that shook the area last Sunday morning.

As a result of these earthquakes, 10 people were injured; however, there are no reports of fatalities, according to official reports.
