The restoration process of the iconic Faro Vargas in Cabo Cruz, located in the Granma province, has experienced significant delays due to a mercury spill that occurred after the recent earthquakes measuring 6.0 and 6.9 that affected eastern Cuba.

The lighthouse, which dates back to 1871 and stands 34 meters above sea level, suffered significant structural damage, including cracks that have complicated its assessment and repair, reported the government of Cuba on the Presidential portal.

Specialists from GEOCUBA, responsible for assessing the damage, have employed drones to conduct a detailed analysis of the impacts, while safety measures are being implemented to restrict access to the area affected by the mercury spill.

This incident has delayed the recovery efforts of the lighthouse, although the vitality of navigation in the area has been maintained thanks to the installation of a temporary auxiliary structure.

The Cabo Cruz lighthouse, an important landmark for navigation in the region, is regarded as a historical and cultural heritage site, making its restoration a priority in the context of recovering infrastructure impacted by recent seismic activity.

Currently, specialists are working to restore this symbol of the region to its full functionality.
