The United States Embassy in Cuba announced on Friday the arrival of Mike Hammer as the new Chief of Mission, succeeding his predecessor Benjamin G. Ziff.
With a distinguished career spanning over 35 years in the diplomatic service, Hammer arrives in Havana after having played a pivotal role as Special Envoy for the Horn of Africa, according to an official statement from the diplomatic mission.
The U.S. Embassy emphasized that Hammer's arrival in Havana reinforces the United States' commitment to promoting human rights in Cuba and improving bilateral relations, particularly in key areas of mutual interest such as security and the well-being of the Cuban people.
In its message, the diplomatic mission warmly welcomed the diplomat and his family, highlighting his extensive experience and focus on international cooperation. "We look forward to working together to strengthen the ties between our nations," the official statement concluded.
Throughout his career, Hammer has held high-level positions, including that of U.S. Ambassador to Chile and the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
In Washington, he served as Under Secretary of State for Public Affairs, spokesperson for the National Security Council, and Director of Andean Affairs at the State Department. His extensive experience also includes a role at the National Defense University, where he was Acting Vice President and Deputy Commandant of the Eisenhower School.
The new Head of Mission, who grew up in Latin America and has lived in countries such as Honduras, El Salvador, Colombia, Venezuela, and Brazil, has a deep understanding of the region. He speaks Spanish fluently, as well as being proficient in French and Icelandic, the text notes.
Mike Hammer is married to Margret Bjorgulfsdottir, and they have three children.
On October 30th, diplomat Benjamin G. Ziff, chargé d'affaires at the United States Embassy in Cuba, concluded his mission in Havana. To bid farewell, he dedicated an emotional video in which he shares part of his experience on the Caribbean island: “In Cuba, I have lived unforgettable moments. I leave the island with a tremendous impression of how beautiful Cuba is, and how beautiful its people are.”
