Egg container burned in Pinar del Río

Amidst a severe food shortage, a video showing the burning of egg cartons in Pinar del Río has gone viral, sparking outrage on social media.

A video shared on social media shows the burning of a container full of eggs in a warehouse in Consolación del Sur, Pinar del Río, sparking outrage among Cubans.

A person named Javi (@JaviXCubaLibre) shared on the social network X (formerly Twitter) that the incident occurred in Consolación del Sur, amid a severe shortage of that product.

"The children haven't received eggs from the State for eight months," said the person speaking in the video.

Although the complainant stated that the regime "prefers to burn them rather than distribute them to the population so they can eat," it is likely that the goods were spoiled due to poor storage conditions or another reason.

"This is a warehouse here in Consolación del Sur. The stock was as high as the ceiling. It has gone down quite a bit, really a lot," the informant noted, describing the extent of the losses.

"They do this hidden from the people," he added.

The shared video supports the whistleblower's statements, showing a large pile of charred egg cartons, from which smoke was still emanating at the time of recording.

This incident occurs amid a severe food shortage in Cuba, with uncontrolled inflation driving the price of a carton of eggs up to 5,000 pesos. Furthermore, it takes place in a context where national production is so depressed that the regime has had to resort to importing eggs from other countries.

Between June 2023 and August 2024, Cuba imported eggs from the Dominican Republic for a total of $6,726,483.60, a measure driven by the urgent need to offset the lack of domestic production due to the severe crisis in the agricultural sector, particularly in poultry farming, which has been affected by shortages of supplies and resources.

The executive director of the Dominican Poultry Producers Association (ADA), Gregory Marte, noted to the news outlet Diario Libre that the Cuban market has shown a significant increase in the demand for eggs, driven by Cuba's internal difficulties in sustaining its own production.
