In light of the serious crisis regarding security personnel affecting educational institutions in Havana, the families of the República del Perú Primary School in the La Lisa municipality have been compelled to organize themselves and take shifts to ensure the safety of the students, a responsibility that should fall to the Ministry of Education.
The educational center expressed its gratitude to families on its Facebook profile for their collaboration in the cooperative shifts, a gesture it viewed as a demonstration of the commitment of the educational community in light of the lack of custodians.
“The school principal, Leorkis Gómez Romero, along with the Board of Directors, composed of Kenia Duarte, Yusiley, Yudith, and Yoana Rodríguez Villa, together with the teachers and staff, express their gratitude for the support from all families in this noble cause of backing our school due to the shortage of custodians,” they stated in the post.
Although in their public messages they emphasize feeling "proud and happy" to support the school under the slogan "together we are stronger," the situation reflects a concerning reality: the community has been forced to take on security tasks that belong to the authorities, highlighting a disturbing lack of resources in the educational system.
With phrases like "Not even a little bit for the thief! No truce!" parents are also confronting the growing concern over crime in the school environment.
In July, a man was arrested after being involved in a knife robbery at the Jorge Arturo Vilaboy basic secondary school, located in the Old Havana municipality, highlighting the insecurity that exists in Cuba, even in educational institutions.
According to the facts presented by Javier Gutiérrez on the social media platform Facebook, the detainee entered the educational center and took two cell phones from the administrator's office, but was caught as he was leaving.
Moreover, the regime is not only incapable of ensuring safety in schools, but it also frequently faces criticism for the poor nutrition of students.
In 2023, the children attending the República de Costa Rica Primary School in the Luyanó neighborhood of Havana were left without lunch following an alleged theft at the facility.
A worker at the center revealed that the management informed the police after noticing the disappearance of six sacks of rice and an undetermined number of cartons of eggs.
