Hialeah is close to having President Donald J. Trump Avenue

Hialeah seeks to rename Palm Avenue. The proposal will be discussed by the Miami-Dade commission, highlighting the Republican support in the city.

The city of Hialeah, located in Miami-Dade County, is seeking the support of county commissioners to rename one of its main roads, Palm Avenue, to "President Donald J. Trump Avenue."

"Thanks to the support of the Hialeah City Council, Palm Avenue, which divides the east and west of the city, will now be called PRESIDENT DONALD J TRUMP AVENUE," said Mayor Esteban Bovo on Instagram.

The proposal will be discussed on December 3rd in the Miami-Dade commission, according to The Miami Herald.

This initiative, approved by the Hialeah commissioners in November 2023, reflects the strong support of The City that Progresses for President-elect Donald Trump.

The community of Hialeah is predominantly Hispanic and leans Republican. However, the historical preservation board expressed reservations about the name change of the avenue.

Esteban Bovo clarified that the name Palm Avenue will not be completely removed, and the section known as "Veterans Way" will remain unaffected. The proposal aims to coexist with the current designation in some segments, incorporating signs with the new name.

The approval of the application will require a simple majority in the Miami-Dade Commission, although partisan divisions could influence the outcome. In other words, Donald J. Trump Avenue depends on a Democratic vote to be recorded on the city maps.

This type of designation is not new in the county. In 2016, Miami Gardens named part of Northwest 185th Terrace as "President Barack and Michelle Obama Boulevard."

However, changing the names of county-managed roads to honor living federal officials requires a two-thirds supermajority.

Hialeah, known as a Republican stronghold in South Florida, has a population of over 221,000 residents according to the 2023 census, making it the eighth most populous city in the state.
