"In the house of Cubans, a towel dies and a mop blanket is born": Cuban in Miami sparks laughter on TikTok

"We Cubans are the salvation of the environment; we really know how to recycle."

The Cuban @yaisyvega sparked laughter on TikTok with her amusing video where she describes how, in a Cuban household, nothing is thrown away and everything is transformed. With a touch of humor, she explained the life cycle of everyday objects that go from being what they were to serving a completely new purpose.

"In our homes, for us Cubans, a towel dies and a mop cloth is born; a blouse dies and a rag for the kitchen or for cleaning furniture is born; a yogurt container dies and a bag for storing meat is born; an ice cream dies and a container for keeping things cold is born; a can of beer dies and a small can for cold drinks is born," he said in the video, then concluded with a phrase that drew applause: "We Cubans are the salvation of the environment; we really know how to recycle."

The video quickly generated reactions that mix laughter, nostalgia, and even a bit of reflection on everyday practices in Cuba due to shortages. One user commented, "In Cuban households, nothing dies; everything has to last for 100 years." Another added with a laugh, "A building collapses and a little park with four benches is born." Some also joked with more extreme examples, like "A washing machine dies and a fan comes to life."

Many of the comments reflect the shared experiences of those who grew up in Cuba or have roots on the island: “I believe you, I still remember going to Havana and it didn’t occur to me that I had to bring a bag to the store because they wouldn’t give me one”; “Need taught us that everything is useful for something”; “When a water bottle dies, a smaller one is born for snack time”; “Wiping the car with a pair of worn-out underwear, that’s me.” Others couldn't help but applaud the ingenuity: “That never fails, it’s brilliant”; “The purest truth”; “Then they say the Chinese are the ones who invent.”

Although the video is filled with humor, it also conveys a clear message about the creativity and ingenuity that emerge in times of need. For Cubans, recycling is not just a trend or an ecological strategy, but a skill developed out of survival that demonstrates their ability to adapt.

In this way, @yaisyvega manages to connect with her followers by reminding them that behind every laugh, there is a story of how to turn challenges into solutions with a touch of humor and, of course, a lot of Cuban heart.
