In an act of solidarity and commitment to the most vulnerable communities, the solidarity project "Huellas" launched an initiative to provide a dignified Christmas dinner to over 100 families in Guantánamo, affected by Hurricane Oscar and living in extreme poverty.
In addition to food, the campaign aims to provide material donations and hope to these families facing a profound crisis.
The activist Johanna Jolá Álvarez, leader of the project, shared the details of this initiative through her Facebook account: “The Huellas team has decided to promote a different Christmas and New Year's for those families who are in extreme survival situations in Guantánamo,” she wrote.
Additionally, they indicated that they intend to extend the initiative to the communities of San Antonio del Sur, Imías, Baracoa, Maisí, Yacabo, and Macambo, where the situation is particularly critical following the damage caused by Hurricane Oscar last October.
Jolá explained that the project aims not only to provide a Christmas meal but also to gather a variety of donations to address the most pressing needs of these families.
The items requested include clothing, footwear, toys, school supplies, medications, non-perishable food, and even furniture and kitchen utensils.
“Huellas enables its accounts for anyone who wishes to join the Fiesta del Amor to do so,” it announced, indicating that donations can be made in Cuban pesos (CUP) or in freely convertible currency (MLC).
The monetary contributions will enable the purchase of food and other necessary resources for the activity.
The "Huellas" team is scheduled to head to Guantánamo on December 25th to deliver donations, prepare dinner, and distribute it for free among families in need.
"In that ocean of needs in which they struggle to survive, we will prepare the food that we will distribute for free. Let the essential ingredient be the love of all those who will share, not from what we have left over, but from the little that we possess," the activist stated.
The critical situation of families in Guantánamo, living in deplorable conditions, has prompted the "Huellas" project to call for everyone’s solidarity to provide them with assistance and hope: “It is very painful to see what our brothers in Guantánamo are enduring in such deplorable and impoverished conditions.”
Last November, activist Jolá felt it was important to remind people on social media that, although Hurricane Rafael impacted the western region of Cuba, along with widespread blackouts across the country and seismic activity in the east, the province of Guantánamo remained in a state of emergency due to the damage caused by Cyclone Oscar.
Johanna Jolá Álvarez, leader of the solidarity initiative "Huellas," emphasized on Facebook that they intend to return to that area to continue assisting those affected.
Moreover, as a demonstration of their intention to assist those affected, last October the solidarity initiative "Huellas" sent a total of 300 boxes with donations for the impacted families.
