The Cuban girl Amanda Lemus Ortiz, who underwent surgery on Monday in a hospital in Madrid to have a stent placed in her bile duct, came through the operation successfully, as activist Yamilka Laffita (Lara Crofs) updated a few hours ago on her social media.
“She has already left the operating room. Everything went well, thank God. They are still preparing her. I haven't seen her yet, but the doctors told me that everything went fine. It took a long time because it was complex, but the stent is already in place. It was quite a major surgery, but now we just have to wait for recovery,” Laffita mentioned on social media, quoting a message from Mila, the girl's mother.
In another subsequent post, the activist shared a photo of the girl in the recovery room of the hospital, expressing her admiration for Amanda's strength, who has gone through a difficult journey to get here. "Today Yordy Battle told me that God has a very big purpose for Amanda, and I like to believe that’s true. You are so strong, beautiful girl with infinite eyes! We continue to send you all the good things in this world. A big kiss from this community," wrote Lara Crofs.
As of the time of this report, there are no new updates on the clinical condition of the minor.
Amanda, who underwent a liver transplant in Spain in March, had to be hospitalized again on November 27.
She had been experiencing itching for days, which even started to cause her problems at night when she was sleeping. When she was taken to the hospital, they performed an emergency ultrasound and discovered that her bile duct was dilating once again.
On November 28, they were supposed to place a stent in the dilated duct to allow it to function properly, but it was impossible to proceed because the duct was too narrow. They inserted a drain to expel the bile from his body, and a week later, they attempted to access the duct again, but without success.
"The doctors decided to proceed with surgery to do everything possible to recondition that passage and place the stent, as without it there is a risk of relapse that could once again impact the healthy liver," Lara specified last week.
In early November, seven months after Amanda's transplant in Madrid and after the Cuban healthcare system had left her to fend for herself, Lara shared a photograph that showcased the remarkable progress of the little girl.
"Do you know that little face? For me, it represents will, the idea that 'where there's a will, there's a way,' and the unity of a civil society that rose in pursuit of a greater and more noble cause," the activist said.
The struggle to save Amanda's life began in January when her mother publicly apologized to her in a message that went viral, expressing regret for bringing her into a country that could not meet her medical needs.
Amanda was suffering from a severe liver disease and urgently needed a liver transplant, but the limitations in Cuba made the surgery impossible. Thus, a humanitarian visa was requested for her. After several weeks of advocacy supported by activists, independent media, and generous Cubans, the necessary funds were raised for Amanda and her parents to travel to Spain, where a hospital had agreed to take her case.
