A person died after being hit by a vehicle on Monday along the Pinar del Río-Havana highway, near the CUJAE technology university.
According to reports on social media, the fatal accident occurred around four in the morning on Monday, between the bridge of Bello 26 and that of Avenida 114, where the victim was hit by a taxi, witnesses said.
The author of a post in the Facebook group "Gasoline in Havana, where is it??" claimed that the deceased was a man. "Now on the highway, before the CUJAE bridge, a man was killed in an accident," wrote Yannier Moreno. However, in other posts, several people stated that it was an elderly woman.
A video shared by a user on the profile "Bus & Truck Accidents for More Experience and Fewer Victims!" shows a covered body beside the road, a state taxi nearby, and police officers at the scene.
According to a man who claimed to have passed by 10 minutes after the accident occurred, it was a "black classic car" that struck the individual, who died at the scene.
As of the time of writing this note, other details of the incident remain unknown, which may have been caused by insufficient lighting on the road or recklessness on the part of the victim while crossing the street or the vehicle's driver.
"There is no well-lit road; you have to be a magician to drive at night," warned a driver. Another added, "That area is incredibly dark, and often people cross without even being seen. You only notice them when they are a few meters away from you. Not to mention that many vehicles have their fog lights on, which blinds oncoming drivers. At night, you have to be very careful."
Another forum user was more emphatic: "Another victim of the anarchy that has taken over the roads!!... Lack of everything!!... Lack of courtesy... lack of caution... lack of responsibility... lack of awareness and even humanity!! We forget that it happened to that person today... but tomorrow it could be a mother or a child of ours!!! Or any driver!!”
Unfortunately, the roads and streets of Cuba remain a dangerous environment for both pedestrians and drivers. The poor condition of most routes, combined with frequent causes of accidents such as speeding and lack of attention to driving, along with the absence of proper signage, contributes to this issue.
Last week, a series of accidents with fatal outcomes were reported in various provinces.
The beginning of the second week of December turned out to be very tragic: on the Central Highway, near the town of Bejuco in Las Tunas, a taxi and a rental car for tourists collided head-on, igniting a fire in the latter. As a result of the collision and the fire, the two occupants of the rental car and the taxi driver lost their lives.
The next day, a 14-year-old boy riding his bicycle was killed when he was struck by a car that was traveling above the speed limit in a neighborhood of Songo-La Maya, in Santiago de Cuba. The driver fled the scene and did not provide assistance to the minor.
Meanwhile, in the city of Camagüey, another person lost their life and two others were injured when two speeding motorcycles collided with a car.
