Friends and neighbors of the man who was found murdered last Wednesday in a chair on a street in Havana have shared messages of grief and outrage over his violent death.
The victim, known as Luis El Garfio, lived on San Bernardino Street, between San Indalecio and San Benigno, in the Santos Suárez neighborhood, in the municipality of Diez de Octubre.
His body was found with a stab wound to the chest on Christmas Day, around noon, on Acosta Avenue, at the intersection of José de la Luz y Caballero Street, near Mónaco, sitting in an armchair placed in front of a pharmacy.
"Luisssss, my friend, why you, man? You have no idea how the whole block has felt your loss, brother. You will always be in our hearts because despite everything, you were a good friend, a good father, a good son, a good brother. My brother, rest in peace," expressed Ernesto Herrera on Facebook.
"But don't worry, rest in peace, those bastards who did that to you will pay sooner or later; in this life, no one escapes without owing something. I love you, neighbor and more than a neighbor, friend and brother. Santos Suárez is in mourning," he added.
Ernesto mentioned that on December 24th, he and the victim met and spent time together.
"Let there be justice, as there is a mother, a brother, children, and a neighborhood mourning this loss," he demanded.
Others mourned the murder of Luis, describing him as someone very beloved by everyone in the neighborhood who never got into trouble with anyone.
"Whoever did this should feel the full weight of the law. Justice for Luisito; that man didn’t interfere with anyone, he worked hard for his money, and what they did to him is very serious," said Karina Fuentes Piñón.
After the discovery of the body, local residents shared details of the tragic event on social media. According to one account, the armchair was not originally in that location.
"He was at the corner of Luz and Caballero and Acosta, where a man had thrown him out. They moved the armchair almost right in front of the pharmacy. He was stabbed and left sitting there. He looks to be about 50 years old, and nobody from the neighborhood knows him," he stated.
Another neighbor described the conditions of the area, highlighting the insecurity that characterizes the neighborhood at night: "Avenida Acosta is very lonely at night, and everyone stays indoors. It was at the door of the pharmacy, which usually has its lights off, and on the other corner is the old house of the late Elio Revé, which, although it provides some light, is still quite shadowy. I’m really very impressed."
The residents in the area were able to see forensic experts and officers from the Technical Investigation Department (DTI) conducting inquiries to clarify the events.
So far, no details have been revealed regarding the circumstances of the incident. Authorities have not released any official information about it.
