Three members of a family, a couple and their daughter, were found dismembered last Friday in the area known as "La Picadora" - also referred to as "Picadora de Hatillo" - in Santa Clara, Villa Clara.
According to preliminary reports on social media, the remains were found inside abandoned suitcases in a reservoir in the area.
The victims have been identified as Yunier Jiménez, his daughter Yenlys Jiménez Pérez (11 years old), and Meivis Díaz Báez (24 years old), Yunier's wife.
The family was originally from Sagua la Grande, about a 30-minute drive from the location of the discovery.
The macabre discovery
According to the Facebook page "Crímenes en Cuba" and reports gathered on social media, a neighbor alerted the authorities upon noticing that his dog was carrying something that looked like a human arm in its mouth.
The events reporter, Niover Licea, detailed that the location where the human remains were found is near Abel Santamaría International Airport and is known as a "cow zone."
A post in the Facebook group Revolico Sagua La Grande identified two individuals allegedly linked to the crime, a man named "Yasmany" and his mother, who resides in the United States. However, this theory has not been confirmed.
According to this version, the woman would have sent money from abroad to her son to commit the homicide.
Among the hypotheses circulating in the networks as a motive for the crime is a potential settlement of scores, possibly related to an attempted illegal exit from the country.
Regarding the alleged murderer, who has reportedly been arrested, it has emerged that he was engaged in bread sales and had been released from prison after serving only two years of his sentence for the rape of his underage stepdaughter.
Before being arrested this Monday, Yasmany allegedly threatened "three girls" with a knife in the town of Laredo and reportedly even bit one of them on the face.
However, all are unconfirmed reports, as the authorities have not yet made a statement regarding the brutal crime.
Reactions and background of violence
The terrible murder has brought to mind the triple homicide that took place in May 2023 in Bellotex, Matanzas, when a reservist of the Armed Forces killed Maikel González, Lianet Lucía Medina, and her six-year-old son.
The rising wave of violence in Cuba, exacerbated by the economic and social crisis, has generated fear and outrage among the citizens.
Many social media users have demanded justice and exemplary measures to punish these acts, including the reinstatement of the death penalty.
The lawyer Manuel Viera, who claimed to be well-acquainted with the area where the crime occurred, reflected in a Facebook post on the escalation of violence in Cuba.
"We are gradually normalizing violent crime, horrendous murders! We are getting used to it! It’s very sad, and I just hope that the animal or animals who did this face the full weight of the law. No one has the right to take a life, let alone the life of an entire family. Only for cases like these would I support the death penalty without hesitation!" she wrote.
