Cuban singer and songwriter Descemer Bueno has responded to recent statements made by visual artist Michel Mirabal, who, in an interview with La Joven Cuba, spoke about his experience in Miami and reflected on freedom in the island.

In his interview, Mirabal emphasized what he saw as a contradiction in the perception of the Cuban diaspora in the United States.

According to the artist, when he visits Miami, he encounters "wonderful people," individuals who, although they do not agree with the political system in Cuba, have valid reasons for their anger, as they had to leave their belongings behind and separate from their loved ones.

Descemer Bueno responded to the interview with a message emphasizing the urgency of freedom in Cuba, a need that, according to him, has been ignored for more than six decades. "What Cuba lacks is freedom," the singer stated.

"Freedom in the media, freedom of expression, freedom in everything. And they should stop robbing Cubans of their pride, happiness, and dignity," said the musician.

"What's the point of having the best farms in the country and several houses if, in the end, when I go out, I have to see sad faces, people in hunger, misery, and streets filled with trash?" he questioned.

"That is the result of more than 65 years of theft, wickedness, hunger, and misery. All because there is a billionaire family that steals everything, with your consent," said the Cuban singer and songwriter, who has been based in Miami for several years.

The artist also expressed his dissatisfaction with the Cuban political system, criticizing the repressive situation in the country and the lack of space for dissent. "Gather your courage and speak the truth about your brothers," he challenged.

Cuban presenter Alex Otaola, who has repeatedly pointed out the impossibility of reconciliation between the two shores of the Florida Strait while the Communist Party of Cuba (PCC) remains in power, also responded to the post.

"Lovely people who are disrespected by their indoctrination and support for the regime. Lovely people who have had their families imprisoned since July 11," he said, referring to the repression against the protesters from July 11, 2021.

Other forum members told Mirabal that he tried to soften the term "dictatorship" by referring to the Havana regime as "system."

Michel Mirabal is one of the most controversial visual artists in Cuba. While he has some alignment with the authorities and does not hide his admiration for figures such as former Communist Party leader Lázaro Expósito, he has also expressed his admiration for the singer Willy Chirino, to whom he gifted one of his works.
