South Florida is preparing for a drastic drop in temperatures with the arrival of a cold front that will bring the coldest air recorded in the last two years.

This weather phenomenon, driven by a polar Arctic air mass, will impact both daytime and nighttime temperatures, reaching unusually low levels for the region.

Monday began with mild temperatures ranging from 67°F (19.4°C) to 78°F (25.5°C), but this will be the last warm day before the arrival of the cold front.

The change is expected to be felt on Tuesday morning when minimum temperatures drop to 50°F (10°C), leading to a notable cooling that will last for several days.

The polar air mass responsible for this drop has already caused heavy snowfall in the Midwest and Northeast of the United States.

As it moves southward, it will impact the weather in southern Florida, bringing temperatures down to about 10-15 degrees below normal for this time of year.

Detailed forecast: three days of intense cold

Tuesday:

A sunny but cold day is expected, with minimum temperatures between 55°F and 58°F (12.7°C-14.4°C) and maximum temperatures between 64°F and 66°F (17.7°C-18.8°C).

Winds will begin to intensify as the cold front settles in the region.

Wednesday:

This will be one of the coldest days of the week.

Minimum temperatures could range from 48°F to 51°F (8.8°C to 10.5°C), while maximum temperatures will barely reach 69°F to 72°F (20.5°C to 22.2°C).

Thursday:

Although a slight increase is expected, temperatures will remain cool. The lows will be between 48°F and 51°F (8.8°C-10.5°C), with highs ranging from 68°F to 71°F (20°C-21.6°C).

Miami will experience lows that could drop to 46°F (7.7°C), marking a climatic milestone, as temperatures haven't been this low since January 2023.

This change poses a challenge for the residents, who are used to a warmer climate.

Recommendations for Coping with the Cold

In light of these unusual weather conditions, it is advisable to take the following precautions:

Dress appropriately: Use winter clothing, especially during the mornings and evenings, when temperatures will be lower.

Protect pets: Keep domestic animals in warm and sheltered places.

Take care of sensitive plants: Cover them or move them indoors to prevent damage from low temperatures.

Stay updated on weather reports: Keep an eye on the updates to stay informed about any changes in weather conditions.

Safe use of heaters: According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), heaters are one of the leading causes of residential fires. Some important tips include:

Place the heaters on level, hard, and non-flammable surfaces.

Avoid using it near curtains, rugs, or bedding.

Never leave them unattended and turn them off before going to sleep or leaving the room.

Although cold temperatures will dominate much of the workweek, South Florida will regain its warm weather in time for the weekend, with highs approaching 80°F (26.6°C).

This increase will be a relief for those who are not accustomed to winter conditions.
